Powering down 2024 to charge up 2025
2024 may be heading for the off-ramp, but it’s been an incredible year in eMobility. We’ve seen record EV adoption, booming charger installations, and a growing demand for the very best that greener driving has to offer.
With global EV sales heading for a whopping 16.7 million units, 2024 has set the tone for a pretty electric 2025. And that’s true here at Spirii, too, with our acquisition by Edenred at the beginning of the year charging us up with the resources, reach, and operational scale we need to expand our work globally.
As a leading provider of digital payment and mobility solutions across 45 countries, Edenred is the perfect partner to help us accelerate our mission to revolutionise EV charging and lead the electrification and decarbonisation of global transportation—particularly fleet transitions.
Incoming fleet revolution
Fleet electrification has been front and centre this year, driven by the pressing need to decarbonise transportation at scale. Company cars, logistics, and heavy transport vehicles are all moving towards electric—but it’s a transition that isn’t without its fair share of challenges, with extended waiting times for power and a substantial upfront investment in new vehicles and hardware among the main hurdles.
To address these barriers, we’ve focused on creating solutions to make the transition smoother and more profitable for fleet operators. One of the most effective approaches has been helping businesses open private depot chargers for public use at a fee, enabling operators to generate new revenue streams while also expanding the semi-public charging network.
Success stories like Tide Bus and Dito Bus have proven how powerful this strategy can be, while shared depot solutions in the UK – developed with partners like Vital EV Solutions and Paua – are also gaining significant traction.
Driving growth through partnerships
Collaboration has, by and large, been the cornerstone of our successes in 2024. A raft of powerful team-ups across commercial ventures, hardware, software, and roaming have supercharged our impact and massively extended our reach.
On the client side, one major milestone has been our partnership with Circle K—over 600 DC charge points spanning four European markets have successfully migrated to Spirii’s platform. There’s also been huge momentum in the German market, where thousands of Audi AG and GP JOULE CONNECT chargers also joined the Spirii fold.
Beyond simply growing our operations, we’ve also partnered with a range of service providers to introduce innovative new products and features.
A big one for us has been the rollout of Plug’n’Charge technology via Hubject – with Audi AG as our flagship partner – to allow EV drivers to connect, charge, and pay by simply plugging in their vehicles. Our partnership with Payter, meanwhile, has helped us elevate our customer experience by making contactless payment a simpler and faster process than ever before.
Then there’s our new secret weapon: PowerDelta. Created in partnership with Zaptec, PowerDelta is an intelligent algorithm that helps make operating a charging network much more energy-efficient and cost-effective.
And finally, we entered a long list of roaming partnerships with providers like Tap Electric, BeMo, Deftpower, Elton, Optimile, Eneco, Northe, and Vattenfall—driving over 50% network growth and resulting in nearly 500,000 roaming charge points.
All in all, 2024 has been a year of incredible innovation and progress. Yet, it has also been a year of invaluable learnings, underscoring both the complexity and the opportunities within the EV landscape.
Looking back to propel forward
One of the most valuable lessons learned in 2024 is that building a robust EV charging ecosystem requires much more than simply installing and operating chargers. The explosive growth in EV adoption has put unprecedented pressure on power grids, underscoring the urgent need for new solutions around smart charging, energy management, and grid services like frequency regulation.
Another key focus has been ensuring end-user satisfaction. In a super competitive sector, and with new EV drivers expecting a charging experience that exceeds the convenience and reliability of traditional fueling stations, being able to offer simple charging and hassle-free payment is paramount. That’s while, as regulatory standards tighten in 2025, governments and industry stakeholders will be pushing for greater standardization, accessibility, and transparency.
The good news is that these challenges are also opportunities—ones that can serve as profitable points of differentiation. To truly prepare for the next phase of the EV revolution, it’s essential that CPOs invest in future-proof hardware capable of supporting tomorrow’s charging functionality.
Powerful predictions
Let’s leave off with a little look into our eMobility crystal ball, and a bonus prediction to keep you ahead of the curve in 2025: stationary batteries are going to have a huge year!
With the ability to supplement energy supplies, store power for high-cost periods, and help regulate demand, stationary batteries are going to play a crucial role in tomorrow’s eMobility infrastructure. And, importantly, that added prominence will bring with it a host of new revenue opportunities.
We’ve already started exploring these avenues with Voltoss, and our insights tell us that 2025 is going to be the year that stationary batteries gain some brilliant new superpowers. Watch this space!
Thank you, as ever, for being a big part of an incredibly high-voltage year at Spirii. Now it’s time to plug in, charge up, and get ready for an electrifying 2025.
